The building was much more than a house. It was really a small castle that seemed to be patterned closely after the kind that had once been built on wideswept monoliths that overlooked the valleys of Scotland, Wales, or the valley of the Loire River in France.

Thomas and Rina followed Pee Wee up the steps and into a large hall while other servants brought up the rear with the luggage. The hall was beautifully paneled with tropical wood and off to one side was an enormous stone staircase that led to the up portion of the building.

“The guest suite is on the floor above,” Pee Wee said. “If you prefer, we can use the elevator but by taking the staircase you'll be able to see more of the house.”

“We'll use the steps,” Thomas said.

Pee Wee was quite right. By walking up the broad semicircular steps, Thomas not only became aware of the various art treasures that were hung on the walls but he also came to the realization that Hawksbill House was not just a fine replica of a small baronial castle, it was in fact a real one, transported stone by stone from its original location to the island.

“Will my uncle be back by six?” Thomas asked.

“Most assuredly,” Pee Wee answered with a smile. “You will know when he returns from the sound of the plane as it lands. If you need or want anything just use the white phone. The black one is for outside calls.”

“Thank you,” Rina said.

“I hope you enjoy your stay at Hawksbill House,” he told them and took his leave, closing the door softly behind him.

“I can't make up my mind,” Thomas said as soon as the door was shut, “whether he's obsequious or domineering. But no matter which, I find him grating.”

“I think he's quite charming,” Rina answered. “Besides, there is a mysterious air about him which attracts as much as it repels.”

Thomas immediately understood the double meaning of her words but rather than argue he shook his head and changed the subject.

“I feel as though I'm dreaming all this,” he said. “I knew William was terribly wealthy but I had no idea that he owned all this.”

Rina went to the highly polished wooden louver doors that led to the terrace and opened them. The view was breathtakingly beautiful. The water in the cove was
